1999 Draft
The draft started with Tim Couch and ended with James Finn.
Along the way we saw five quarterbacks taken with the first 12 picks, and as expected the Browns, Eagles, and Bengals used the first three picks in the draft to select quarterbacks Couch, McNabb, and Smith. This marked the first time quarterbacks were taken 1-2-3 since Jim Plunkett, Archie Manning and Dan Pastorini went 1-2-3 in 1971. Then, in a surprising move the Colts selected running back Edgerrin James from Miami over Heisman trophy winner Ricky Williams. As a result Ditka got his man, as the Saints moved up to the fifth spot and drafted Ricky Williams. The Saints gave the Redskins all their 1999 draft picks and their first and second round draft picks in 2000 to get Ricky Williams. This was just one of many trades which took place over the two days of the draft.
