Cornerback Update: 3/18/98

The cornerback position remains the deepest, most talented in the draft with at least four continuing to carry first round grades. Georgia's Champ Bailey leads the list and is a truly elite player who won't last past number three come draft day. Bailey is without a doubt the best defensive player in the draft and I believe he is a better player than Charles Woodson at a similar stage. Bailey has the versatility of a Deion Sanders and could impact the game in all three phases. North Carolina's Dre` Bly continues to be the biggest disappointment. Last year at this time, Bly would have been a top 20 pick as a sophomore, now it's a question mark whether he will go in the second round. Arizona's Chris McAlister won't fall below the Vikings at number eleven and Alabama's Fernando Bryant and Ohio State's Antoine Winfield have solidified themselves as first round picks. Here are the new ratings:

  1. Champ Bailey Georgia 6-1 185

  2. Chris McAlister Arizona 6-0 199

  3. Antoine Winfield Ohio State 5-8 180

  4. Fernado Bryant Alabama 5-10 175

  5. Dre` Bly North Carolina 5-10 195

  6. Daylon McCutcheon USC 5-9 180

  7. Fred Vinson Vanderbilt 5-11 178

  8. Tyree Talton Northern Iowa 5-11 208

  9. Andre Weathers Michigan 6-1 188

  10. Ralph Brown Nebraska 5-9 180
