Wide Receiver Update: 2/4/98

With the return of Peter Warrick to Florida State, the 1999 Draft lost it's most dynamic wide receiver. Even with Warrick in the mix, there were going to be no Randy Moss like players having an immediate game changing effect on the NFL. There are however, some solid receivers that will be big timers in a couple of years. With Warrick out of the mix, the winner of the best receiver award belongs to North Carolina State's Torry Holt who should be a top 10 selection. Ohio State junior David Boston, perhaps the draft's most complete receiver is next.

Southern Cal's R.J. Soward also opted to remain on campus leaving room for a couple of newcomers breaking in to the top 10, Michigan's Tai Streets and Colorado's Darrin Chiaverini. A rundown on them appears below. Here a look at the new ratings:

  1. Torry Holt North Carolina State 6-0 190

  2. David Boston Ohio State 6-3 205

  3. D'Wayne Bates Northwestern 6-1 215

  4. Peerless Price Tennessee 5-11 177

  5. Na Brown North Carolina 6-0 186

  6. Troy Edwards Louisiana Tech 5-10 194

  7. Kevin Johnson Syracuse 5-10 188

  8. Leander Stevens North Carolina 6-4 213

  9. Tai Streets Michigan 6-1 190
Streets has great natural talent with above average size, nice hands and good all around athletic ability. He has been a big playmaker at Michigan but probably isn't quick enough off the line or in and out of his breaks to be a big time guy at the next level. He does have the body control and leaping ability to make space and be a solid slot receiver.

  10. Darrin Chiaverini Colorado 6-1 205
Chiaverini is an over achieving, consistent, dependable and durable receiver with nice size and good quickness. His hands are superb and he plays with the toughness to go over the middle. The big question with Chiaverini is his speed but he should develop into a solid possession receiver down the line.
