Quarterback Update: 1/28/99

The big winners after the bowl season at the quarterback position appear to be Syracuse's Donavan McNabb who has made himself into a top 10 pick and Oregon's Akili Smith who has vaulted above all but Tim Couch and McNabb. Smith has clearly put himself into the same category as Daunte Culpepper which is at worst, a certain mid first round pick.

One thing rings mightily when you look at my repositioned top 10 and that is the domination of the list by African American quarterbacks. The NFL has lagged behind the rest of society for years and in some aspects, such as hiring African American coaches, they continue to do so. However, they are now craving athletic quarterbacks that can beat you with their arm and feet which McNabb and Smith are more than capable of doing.

As expected Jarious Jackson has opted to return to Notre Dame so you can scratch him off the list while the big loser seems to be Ohio State's Joe Germaine who has shown little to excite. As for Culpepper, he has dropped from a certain top five pick to a mid first rounder but there are still plenty of teams craving a player of his size and skills at the quarterback position. Cade McNown has also clearly positioned himself behind the big four as a late first or early second round pick. While he doesn't have the big arm, he has shown the smarts and escapability that NFL teams love.

The only newcomer breaking in to the top 10 is Howard's Ted White and a rundown on him appears below:

  1. Tim Couch Kentucky 6-5 220

  2. Donovan McNabb Syracuse 6-2 226

  3. Akili Smith Oregon 6-3 215

  4. Daunte Culpepper Central Florida 6-4 255

  5. Cade McNown UCLA 6-1 215

  6. Brock Huard Washington 6-5 220

  7. Michael Bishop Kansas State 6-1 205

  8. Oscar Davenport North Carolina 6-4 195

  9. Joe Germaine Ohio State 6-2 196

  10. Ted White Howard 6-2 225
White is a small college guy with above average size and solid skills. He's a tough kid who will hang in the pocket and show a good feel to avoid the outside rush. Overall, he lacks great escapability and is not much of a running threat. He has a powerful arm and can make all the throws but obviously lacks experience against big time competition. He will have trouble understanding the complex NFL blitz schemes and already forces too many balls at the college level. White looks like a practice squad guy with the potential to develop.
