Placekicker & Punter Update: 3/25/98

Kansas State's Martin Gramatica has a chance to be the next all everything placekicker. He has all the requisite tools and the biggest leg seen in years. As with all kickers, consistency will make or break Gramatica. He remains the only kicker guaranteed to be drafted and may go as soon as the third round. Tennessee's Jeff Hall also remains a really solid prospect. Notre Dame's Hunter Smith continues to lead the pack at punter and Georgia's Rodney Williams remains the most intriguing prospect. Smith, Oregon's Josh Bidwell and Williams continue to be the only serious prospects at punter. Here are the new ratings:

Placekickers:

  1. Martin Gramatica Kansas State 5-9 170

  2. Jeff Hall Tennessee 6-0 182

  3. Chris Sailer UCLA 5-10 190
Sailer had a spectacular junior year but really fell off as a senior. He has a huge leg, can kickoff and punt. That versatility should get him a look but he is way too inconsistent to be an immediate contributor.

  4. Kris Brown Nebraska 5-10 205

  5. Jose Cortez Oregon State 6-0 203
Cortez is another guy with a monster leg but he is a project who wasn't very effective in college. He may get a look as a kickoff guy and then hopefully develop some consistency as a placekicker.

Punters:

  1. Hunter Smith Notre Dame 6-2 218

  2. Josh Bidwell Oregon 6-3 230

  3. Rodney Williams Georgia Tech 6-1 198
