Guards Update: 2/11/98

With Rob Murphy headed back to Ohio State, the guard pool took quite a hit. Murphy was a certain first round pick and had no peers at the position. It's now highly questionable that any guard will carry a first round tag. Boston College's Doug Brezinski moves to the top of the list. Some of placed Brezinski in the 25 or 30 range on their draft boards but I think that is out of desperation because of the poor overall talent pool at guard. He should be rated at about 40 and be taken rather high in the second round. Washington's Tony Coats stock is dropping but I don't see many guards better than him so he has held the number two spot. Texas' Octavious Bishop is also dropping while Mississippi State's Randy Thomas improves his stock. Cameron Spikes of Texas A&M joins the top 10. Here's the new ratings:

  1. Doug Brezinski Boston College 6-4 305

  2. Tony Coats Washington 6-6 306

  3. Randy Thomas Mississippi State 6-4 292

  4. Derrick Fletcher Baylor 6-6 346

  5. Octavious Bishop Texas 6-4 345

  6. Anthony Cesario Colorado State 6-6 310

  7. Brandon Burlsworth Arkansas 6-3 301

  8. Gene Miller Central Michigan 6-5 290

  9. Mike Rosenthal Notre Dame 6-7 315

  10. Cameron Spikes Texas A&M 6-3 310
Spikes has good size, strong hands and great strength. He is an excellent run blocker with enough quickness to get out and pull. He also has some versatility as he played his first three years at tackle Overall, Spikes is a nice prospect who could develop if he gets the proper techniques down at the next level.
