Middle Linebacker Profiles
By: John McMullen

Even though Brandon Short returned to Penn State, this is the best draft in years for inside linebackers. USC's Chris Claiborne had a monster year and has made himself into a top five pick. Ohio State's Andy Katzenmoyer, even though he had a down year, has the athletic ability, size and tools you don't find very often in an inside guy and should be a top 15 pick. Elsewhere in the top ten, I'm very interested in Tennessee's Al Wilson and Texas A&M's Dat Nguyen, two great college players that are undersized. They both could be the next Sam Mills or Ed McDaniel. The only newcomer on the list is Maryland's Eric Barton. Here are the new ratings:

  1. Chris Claiborne USC 6-3 250

  2. Andy Katzenmoyer Ohio State 6-4 260

  3. Johnny Rutledge Florida 6-2 246

  4. Al Wilson Tennessee 6-0 226

  5. Keith Newman North. Carolina 6-2 243

  6. Dat Nguyen Texas A&M 6-0 216

  7. Barry Gardner Northwestern 6-1 245

  8. Eric Barton Maryland 6-2 230
Barton is an undersized overachiever with great sideline to sideline speed and a middle linebacker's mentality. He lacks functional football strength and may project to the outside but he is a darn good football player.

  9. Sam Sword Michigan 6-2 242
