The Draft

The Giants wanted to improve on their offensive personnel. They needed a young franchise QB, so they signed QB Kerry Collins. As for improving their offensive personnel, the Giants used their first 5 picks in the draft on offensive players. They surprised many by using their 19th pick on Notre Dame OL Luke Petitgout. Petitgout is 6'5'' 315lbs. Many feel that he is a good prospect, but not a great one. The Giants feel good about him and that's all that counts. With their 2nd pick, they selected RB Joe Montgomery from Ohio State. He may have been an earlier pick if it wasn't for a knee injury. Their 3rd round pick was TE Dan Campbell from Texas A&M. This may have been an insurance pick to back up newly acquired TE Pete Mitchell. In the 4th round, the Giants went back to a RB and selected Sean Bennett from Northwestern. Bennett is 6'1'' 223lbs. The last offensive player selected by the Giants in the 5th round was Luke Petitgout's teammate, OL Mike Rosenthal. Rosenthal is 6'7'' 310lbs. He is best suited to play guard if the Eagles don't plan to do too much pulling. Their last 4 selections where on defensive players. The Eagles had 2 selections in the 6th round and they went with 2 DBs. The selected 6'0'' 195lb DB Lyle West from San Jose State and 5'11'' 186lb DB Andre Weathers from Michigan. They also needed a pass rushing DE on the right side. So, with one of their selections in the 7th round, they selected DL Ryan Hale from Arkansas. Hale played DE for the Razorbacks. With their last selection, they selected LB O.J. Childress from Clemson.

Draft Grade

I give the New York Giants a (B). I wanted to give them a (B+) because they wanted to improve their offense and they drafted players to help them accomplish their wish. I gave them a (B) because of the selection of OL Petitgout. He seems to have the skills to play in the NFL, but he may be a project for a year or two.
